Perfectly Imperfect: A Lenten Devotion
“We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
A perfect God loving imperfect humans.
I haven’t been able to shake this concept during this Lenten Season.
For Christians it is a time to stop and reflect on the love of Jesus Christ. Our perfect Savior counting it all joy to be brutally tortured, beaten almost to death and then hung on a cross for us. Every piece of flesh on his body flayed by whips, his nerves screaming in agony and a crown of thorns pressed into his scalp.
He did nothing wrong. Nothing to deserve the punishment he endured.
He became the perfect sacrifice with a love so deep he was willing to take our sin on himself to reconcile us to the father.
Have you ever wondered at his love?
How much love? What kind of love kept him, in the form of a man, hanging on that tree for my sake? Your sake? Every single person on this earth.
As I ruminated on this a thought came to my mind.
I can see a reflection of that love when my 89 year old mother serves my 92 year old father his lunch. My father sits in a wheelchair requiring constant care. He is unable to care for himself. Mom becomes his hands and legs for him day and night. When she hasn’t slept. Or, doesn’t feel well. She gets up and does it, anyway. This is love.
Or, a single mother deserted by her husband who lays down her own desires to raise her children. This is love.
The woman who works full time and takes on the care for her widowed mother who can no longer live alone. This. This is the kind of love that reflects Jesus’.
It’s good to remember sometimes, that even the smallest things we do in the name of love reflect our Savior!
So wild, so huge, so freeing!
I pray you know his deep abiding love for you!
