Destination ~ Destin, Florida for the Deep Thinkers Retreat. Oh my goodness. What an experience! My Book Therapy is all about great people, pizza, movies and laughs. But it's also about learning the craft, encouragement, breaking down your story and personal one-on-one time with a writing coach.
Honestly, I've attended many excellent conferences ~ this one is my all time favorite :-) The beach, warmer weather, sweet fellowship with other writers all helped to make this trip fun. My goal was to take this organic or "pantser" writer to a whole new level and it really did!
Being drawn to write organically also has built in roadblocks as the creative flow begins to dry up so does my time at the pc. The story structure Susan May Warren put together is a go to writing resource to let your characters work for you.
My personal journey also has built in road blocks. And, to be honest, I did not immediately jump for joy at the thought of MBT because the authors who make up the group, I thought, all write primarily romance.
When I talked to Susie she assured me that any genre could be put into the category of the Story Equation she has designed. She's right. For instance in my group alone, we had a fantasy writer, a cozy mystery writer, a historical fiction writer and women's contemporary.
Anyway back to the romance. Always it seems back to the romance. I have nothing against it of course, in fact I love to be romantic with my hubby, just isn't "organic" to me. Susie's workshops involve learning how to tap into the writer's feelings to draw the reader in. Good theory ~ in practice not so easy.
So, I press into the journey. Knowing full well that the Lord has some great scenes for me to re-write in my story just as He has in my relationships. In fact, when I told Sam I was going to add a romantic thread into my novel he hid his smile behind his hand. A wise man my husband. "You're romantic Kelly." Love him! :-)
With new resources at my fingertips, fresh encouragement from Susie, Beth and Rachel and a ton of new friends, I'm ready to write like a boss.
Fun side notes~ I had the chance to check two things off my bucket list. One was to sleep in an upper bunk. My roommate said, "being a few steps closer to God."
Then a stretch limousine came to take us to the airport for our flight home.
Is God amazing or what?
Words fail me to express the grace, hope, life and encouragement I found there. Look at those faces, priceless right? I've made memories, connections with other writers, and mentors to boot.
Check out Coaches Susie May Warren, Beth Vogt and Rachel Hauck at My Book Therapy. You will be glad you did! :-)
Hope I see you there next year~
Thank you to Lisa Marie Webb for the excellent photos!! :-D
