As one who has endured the trauma of being diagnosed with cancer, I can personally recommend Gail Gaymer Martin's book, A Dad of His Own very highly. Somehow, Gail manages to keep the seriousness of the topic from becoming morbid, while handling the subject matter with great sensitivity. The book details 8 year- old Cooper Carlson battling leukemia through the eyes of his single mom, Lexie. Through the non-profit organization, Dreams Come True Foundation, Lexie meets Ethan Fox a widower who has lost his own wife to the disease.
Before he realizes what is happening, Cooper becomes and important person in Ethan's life, as well as Lexie. The book shows how Lexie and Ethan manage to overcome deeper issues of Lexie's past experience with Cooper's dad. As well as Ethan's struggle with not wanting to become involved in relationships that may require more than he has to give.
This book has a rare combination of romance, as well as a testament to hope in a difficult subject matter. Without being heavy-handed Gail Martin delivers the message of Christ through her main character, Lexie, all the while weaving a story that is hard to put down.
All in all, I 'd say that this book is a definite for anyone that is battling cancer or has a loved one who is dealing with this disease.
